Summary
INTRODUCTION: Many plants are used for nutritional or therapeutic purposes, specifically in the development and discovery of new drugs for the treatment of degenerative diseases such as osteoarthritis. This work aimed to study, by means of a standard scale, the analgesic potential of Borreria verticillata L. and the evolution of behavior in an experimental model of osteoarthritis in rodents. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional experimental trial of 20 animals of the Rattus norvegicus (Wistar) species, with approximately 250g, distributed randomly in 4 groups (n=5/group). SADIO Group had no intervention and was not treated; Groups H2OD (Distilled Water), MLX (Meloxicam 100 mg/Kg) and EHBV (Borreria verticillata Hydroalcoholic Extract 500 mg/Kg) underwent induction by intra-articular injection of 2mg of sodium monoiodoacetate (MIA) in the right knee. The groups were treated for 25 days from the 3rd day of induction and had their pain scores assessed by Mouse Grimace Scale (MGS) on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28. The results were statistically evaluated by the analysis test of bivariate variance (TWO-way ANOVA), considered p<0.05 indicative of significance. RESULTS: On the 28th day, the groups under treatment with Meloxicam and EHBV presented a drop in the MGS score of 1.7 and 1.4 points, respectively, when compared to the group treated with Distilled Water (95% CI, MLX vs. H2OD 0.4829 to 2.984; EHBV vs. H2 O 0.1466 to 2.65). In addition, the H2OD group, on the 28th day of the experiment, still maintained the score statistically higher than the SADIO group (95% CI, -3.65 to -1.15); On the other hand, the MLX and EHBV groups did not have significant difference in relation to this. CONCLUSION: The administration of EHBV 500mg / kg promoted an improvement in the behavioral parameters of the animals, especially on the 28th post-induction day, when it reduced the MGS score by 1.4 points, thus suggesting an improvement in the clinical pain parameters.
