The 16^th edition of the International Symposium on Schistosomiasis took place in Ouro Preto, Minas Gerais, Brazil from November 21 to 23, 2022, at the Arts and Conventions Center of the Federal University of Ouro Preto and brought up the theme SCHISTOSOMIASIS AND CITIZENSHIP.

This symposium, the main scientific event specifically dedicated to schistosomiasis, was organized by researchers in schistosomiasis from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Fiocruz, with the support of the Vice-presidency of Research and Biological Collections, through the Translational Research Program in Schistosomiasis (Fio-Schisto), and aimed to bring together the actors involved in the generation of knowledge, products, public policies, and health managers to join efforts and accelerate the process of schistosomiasis elimination as a public health problem. In this way, the symposium will contribute in the future to promoting the exercise of full citizenship by the population of the areas affected by the disease.

The topics addressed in the 16^th edition of the symposium involved disease control and elimination initiatives, such as sensitive diagnostic tests, vaccines, drug development, one health, and intermediate host control. The improvement of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) strategies in health and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) will also be addressed, as well as epidemiological, clinical, and biological aspects of the parasite and its hosts. The 16^th edition of the symposium was attended by 328 registered participants and 98 posters were presented. We had 5 conferences and 10 round tables with 37 presentations given by invited speakers and 24 short presentations selected from the submitted abstracts.

At the same time, the symposium promoted the Celebration of the 10^th anniversary of the Lygature Consortium (Pediatric Praziquantel) and a Satellite Event restricted to health agents and coordinators of health secretariats from the Ministry of Health. With this dynamic, it was possible to carry out rich scientific discussions in a city that is a world heritage site. Thus, the programming of this edition of the symposium covered basic and applied topics, ranging from “molecular to social”, from "discovery to action" and from "knowledge to product".

The annals of the 16^th International Symposium on Schistosomiasis comprise 135 abstracts submitted and approved for presentation during the symposium.
