SignWriting
turns 50 in 2024! Incredible! Valerie and her work are a worldwide treasure!
Therefore, to celebrate, we decided to hold another SignWriting Symposium. We
have a new format this year. Instead of trying to present live, participants
are invited to submit their presentation videos in advance. For each day of the
symposium, Valerie Sutton and Steve Slevinski will present the day's videos and
then make those videos public. Community comments and questions will also be
read and responded to.
The
SignWriting 2024 Symposium is structured into 4 categories, which will be
addressed and distributed throughout each day of the event, as follows:
• Education – July
15th;
• Literature – July
16th;
• Research – July 17th;
• Programs - July 18th.
At
this symposium, we bring together researchers, educators, linguists, education
professionals, members of the deaf community, and other interested parties to
explore the latest innovations, advancements, and practical applications of
SignWriting. The event provides a unique platform for exchanging ideas,
collaborating and discussing how we can improve and expand the use of
SignWriting in a variety of areas.
Over
the 4 days of the event, we will have the privilege of attending presentations
from renowned experts, participating in interactive workshops and contributing
our own experiences and insights. From education and research to translation,
accessibility and technology, SignWriting continues to play a crucial role in
promoting inclusion and empowering deaf communities around the world.
This
symposium represents a unique opportunity to strengthen ties, establish
partnerships and inspire new initiatives that drive the continued development
of SignWriting. We look forward to exploring new perspectives, tackling
challenges, and celebrating the achievements that shape the future of this
revolutionary writing system.
On
behalf of the organizing committee, we would like to express our sincere
gratitude to all participants, speakers, sponsors and collaborators for making
this event possible. May the SignWriting Symposium 2024 be an enriching and
motivating experience for all of us. We invite you to dive into this exciting
journey of learning, discovery and collaboration. May the days ahead be filled
with inspiration, meaningful connections, and continued progress toward a more
inclusive and accessible future for all.
Welcome
to the 2024 SignWriting Symposium!
